Danielle Wright is the creator of
www.itsasmallworld.co.nz, a website featuring
hundreds of nursery rhymes from around the world.
She came up with the idea for her book, My
Village: Rhymes from Around the World as a new
mum seeking to find unusual and beautiful rhymes for
her newborn son. The result is a collection of nursery verses for young children (and the young at heart), including poems from Iran to Iceland, Samoa to Switzerland. Readers can delight in quirky, touching and funny verses from 22 different countries, brought to life by exciting young illustrator, Mique Moriuchi, who captures each verse with a uniquely beautiful and child's-eye focus. Then Children’s laureate Michael Rosen wrote the introduction. "A Nursery Rhyme Book for the 21st Century," Dominion Post / "For tomorrow's global travellers" Australian Woolworths' Parents Magazine. My Village was chosen as one of the outstanding new international books for children selected for the influential The White Ravens 2009 catalogue from the thousands of books that Munich's International Youth Library received as review copies from publishers, authors, illustrators, and organisations from all over the world within the last year. Joy Cowley’s Chicken Feathers and Kate de Goldi’s The 10pm Question were the only other New Zealand recipients. My Village: Rhymes from Around the World was also chosen to be on the NSW (Aus) Premier's Reading Challenge 2009 booklist for 3-4 year olds. Small World Books also runs workshops for schools, libraries and bookshops to bring international books into children's hands and minds - stimulating their imaginations, providing creative opportunities while generating cross-cultural awareness and debate. My Village is used as a platform for discussion and activity. When not finding beautiful, quirky or funny rhymes from around the world, she is a book editor / proofreader / copywriter and publicist, or, more importantly, mum to two children, two cats and a husband! My Village: Rhymes from Around the World is published by Gecko Press (NZ) and will be published by Frances Lincoln (UK) in early 2010. Kiwi Write4Kidz Author Visits -
