Don Long is a poet, editor and, as Don Long, a children’s author. Born in Walla Walla to an American mother (Cajun French) and New Zealand father.

Don Long's volumes of poetry include: Borrow Pit (1971); Storing Stones for Winter (1974); In Search of a Poem (1976) and Pems of the Fifth Season (1977).

In 1979 Don Long worked with Witi Ihimaera to foster Maori writing. They co-edited the Anthology 'Into the World of Light . . . (1982). It followed with five volumes of Te Ao Marama (1992 - 96).

Working for School Publications and its successor, Learning Media, Don began in 1988 to edit children’s books by contemporary Pasifika writers. He has published over one hundred, some in up to seven separate language editions. He edited Matariki (1990–94), Te Ata Hapara (1990–91) and the Tupu series (1988–), all for Learning Media. He founded the Samoan language journal Folauga (1997- ) By fostering publication of New Zealand writers working in Cook Islands Maori, Fijian, Niuean, Samoan, Tokelauan and Tongan, Don contributed to the breakdown of the idea that New Zealand literature is just a Pakeha/Maori art form.

Don Long is the course director of the National Diploma in Children's Literature course 'The Multicultural Experience of Children's Literature', which he developed, and the publishing manager at the South Pacific Press.

Children's books written by Don Long are: The Battlefield (2003) illustrated by Phillip Paea. The Maori translation won the LIANZA award for the best children’s book published in Maori in 2004.

The Lacquered Box by Don and illustrated by Vivienne Lingard was published in 2004. It follows a Vietnamese girl from Auckland on her first trip ‘home’ to Hanoi.

Glow-Worm Night by Don, illustrated by Tracy Duncan (2004), is a story about two children who go glow-worming with their parents at Matariki.
