Elena had a poem published in the children's pages of The Christchurch Press when she was three years old. Deep down, she has wanted to be a writer ever since - she just didn't realise it until forty years later. In between then and now Elena has been busy with a number of different occupations, including being a librarian, looking after her three children and their granny, and participating on an odour panel - don't ask! Over the last few years, Elena has had stories and poems in The School Magazine, a Readers' Theatre Play published by South Pacific Press and a number of readers published by Rainbow Reading. She recently won the Manawatu (New Zealand) International Poetry for Performance Competition and is looking forward to seeing her poem performed in October. Her first picture book The Rain Train arrives in August and is illustrated by Brian Lovelock. Elena is a big fan of Brian's illustrations and was over the moon when she found out that Walker Books Australia had agreed to publish it. The Rain Train - "A pitter-pat-pat, a pitter-pat-pat, pittery-pittery-pittery-pat..." The next time the rain is thundering down on the roof at night, climb aboard the mysterious Rain Train - have your ticket clipped by the conductor... listen to the rhythm of the wheels and sounds of the crossings... leave the lights and the houses behind and take a journey into the dark and stormy night. |
