John Marsden has published thirty
books for children and young adults. John has a unique, empathetic writing
style, which has given a voice to teenagers who often can’t make themselves
heard. His books demonstrate his keen observation of young people’s concerns
including emotional issues such as disempowerment, alienation, love, death,
grief and depression. His stories are intense and highly relevant to his
audience – characters fall in love, face life or death decisions, confront
their fears and tell the truth. John Marsden’s most popular books make up the famous Tomorrow series. The book that started it all, Tomorrow, When the War Began, was published in 1993 and was a landmark in Australian young adult fiction. It not only smashed sales records but completely captured the hearts and imaginations of its young readers and redefined teenage culture. It has won a swag of awards since its release and remains one of Australia’s best-loved books. From a survey of over 40,000 people it was ranked in the top five of Australia’s all-time favourite books. The Tomorrow Series has also been successfully published in several countries. Each installment of the seven book Tomorrow series has been greeted not only with ever increasing sales but with awards and acclaim from both readers and critics. THE AUSTRALIAN calls John Marsden ‘the most popular author today in any literary field’ and the Tomorrow Series has been described by the DAILY ADVERTISER as ‘without a doubt the best series for younger readers that an Australian writer has ever produced’. In 1998 the fifth book in the series, Burning For Revenge, won the Australian Booksellers Association’s Book of the Year award against nominees that included Peter Carey, Richard Flanagan and Tim Winton. In 1999, the hardcover edition of The Other Side of Dawn was one of Australia’s bestselling fiction titles, hitting the number one spot on bestsellers lists all over the country, ahead of authors such as J.K. Rowling, Isabel Allende and James Patterson. John Marsden believes passionately in the power writing and reading have to inspire young people. He runs writing workshops in schools and on his property, the beautiful Tye Estate, just 45 minutes from Melbourne. Every single day of the year John is either writing for teenagers, teaching teenagers or talking about or with teenagers. He is a tireless educator and has visited in excess of 3000 Australian schools, many in remote rural communities and disadvantaged urban areas. Every week he receives hundreds of letters and emails from fans, children, parents and teachers alike thanking him for his books and his commitment to adolescent issues. John Marsden continues to write successfully for all ages and across all genres. Millie, a warmly humorous picture book for the pre-schooler and the child learning to read, is about a highspirited little girl who is very, very good . . . or is she? With delightful pictures by the award-winning artist Sally Rippin, Millie lets the reader discover what Millie has really done by looking at the illustrations. In The Boy You Brought Home: a single mother’s guide to raising sons, John Marsden identifies 101 important steps in fostering a boy’s developing masculinity, which makes this book a practical and essential read for all parents raising boys. And in his newest chapter book of fantasy fiction, A Roomful of Magic he’s collaborated again with the same fantastic illustrators that he worked with on Goodnight and Thanks for the Teeth.
