Lorraine used to be a librarian specialising in children’s books, and when she retired from library work she started writing books herself. She has nine books published so far. She writes for all ages – junior, intermediate and teenage, and has numerous short stories published in the School Journal and in anthologies. Her first novel, Cross Tides, won the NZ Post Best First Book Award for 2004. Lorraine regularly reviews for Magpies, and in 2007 she co-edited an anthology called Out of the Deep and Other Stories From New Zealand and the Pacific (Reed).

Lorraine runs a website called Story-Go-Round which provides more information about her books, as well as including links to Teachers' Notes and Classroom Activities.
