Sher was born in and educated in Christchurch, then
spent quite a number of years living in London. She
had rather a varied career there, working as a West
End cinema usherette and ice cream seller as well as
studying to become a librarian. She now works for a
large multinational firm of consulting engineers. Sher only began to write children’s picture books over the last few years and had her first book The Cat with No Name published by Scholastic in 2009. It tells the tale of a small homeless cat living in a cardboard box under a motorway bridge. Each night he ventures out in search of food and meets up with kind restaurant owners who offer him some leftovers. However, grateful as he is, he needs to venture a bit further in search of some real cat food. The book is illustrated in watercolour by her partner, Brian Lovelock and is suitable for children from 3 to 6 years old. This story was partly inspired by an SPCA cat, Lucy, who lived with Sher for many years. Lucy undoubtedly spent her first years as a thin and hungry little No Name before her luck changed! Sher’s second picture book The Three Little Lambs is part of Scholastic’s Kiwi Corkers series and was published in July 2010. It retells the well-loved traditional tale of The Three Little Pigs in a very Kiwi setting. It is illustrated in acrylic by Deborah Hinde. Instead of houses built of straw, sticks and bricks there are whares built from silver ferns, paua shells and hangi stones. Kiwi Write4Kidz Author Visits -
