Susan
Brocker is an experienced children’s writer whose
books, both fiction and non-fiction, have been
published worldwide. Susan has a history degree and
a great love of social history that is reflected in
her books. She also has a close affinity and love of
animals which also shines through in her writing. Susan had wanted to write a book set in New Zealand for many years, especially one on a topic close to her heart – the wild horses of New Zealand. In February 2007, HarperCollins published her first New Zealand novel for older children, Restless Spirit, an adventure story about a desperate race to save a wild Kaimanawa stallion. Her second novel with HarperCollins is called Saving Sam. It is the moving story of Ben, a troubled young boy struggling to find his place in the world, and the damaged dog he befriends. In 2010, HarperCollins published her nonfiction book about an amazing horse called Bess. In World War One, New Zealand sent over 10,000 horses to war, serving mainly with the Mounted Rifles Brigade in the Middle East. Of all the horses that served in the desert war, only one ever returned home. Brave Bess and the ANZAC Horses is her story. A haiku on a plaque at the site of the old Japanese Prisoner of War camp near Featherston inspired Susan’s latest book, Dreams of Warriors. The story is about a fourteen-year-old girl battling to save the family farm from ruin while her father is away fighting during the Second World War. Susan lives with her husband Lionel and many pets in a lovely old villa on a small farm near Tauranga. For more info go to the HarperCollins website. |
